The Baja Portalegre 500, held from October 30th to November 1st, is the largest Off Road national event and a very important round of the international calendar. Therefore, the numbers associated with the event come as no surprise to everyone.
With a total of 335 teams spread among Autos, Bikes, Quads, UTV/Buggy and Mini Baja, the Automóvel Club de Portugal event is, by far, the largest Off Road competition held in the country. Of those, 88 will be competing with cars (49 on the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies and 39 on the national event). However, the majority of participants will be competing on two wheels. Bikes boost a 107 riders entry list, Quads include 71, UTV/Buggy 38 and Mini Baja will be composed of 34 young riders with ages between 8 and 15 years.
Converting these numbers into nationalities represented at the 28th Baja Portalegre 500, we also end up with very interesting figures. The 2014 edition of the event will herald flags from 18 different countries: Angola, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Kazakhstan, Mozambique, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, The Netherlands and Ukraine.
Looking at numbers, which take us back in time through the history of the Baja, we can also find doble figures. As far as Autos are concerned, the event has known 18 different winners, with the Portuguese Filipe Campos holding the record of five presences at the top step of the rostrum. In the two wheels, however, there has been a total of 13 winners since 1987, with Mário Patrão and António Maio totalling five wins each. Quads, introduced in 2000, comprise 11 winners, with Roberto Borrego boosting a total of three, while Buggies, with a four-year history at the event, have never known a double winner, very much like the UTV and its six editions.
